Reporting Identity Theft to Credit Bureaus

If you have become a victim of identity theft then it is important that you contact the three main credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, Experian) and report this crime, as one of the ways in which criminals can misuse your details is by fraudulently applying for credit products in your name such as new credit cards, bank accounts, cell phone contracts and loans.  Each credit bureau has its own dedicated fraud department, and if you contact one bureau they are required to contact the other two on your behalf, however for peace of mind you may prefer to contact all three yourself.  It is best to report identity theft using the telephone numbers provided and speak to a representative directly, and you could also send a recorded delivery correspondence as well if you want evidence of this contact for your files. Identity protection companies normally try to help you out as well.
